Experience the Streets and People of New York Through Peter Funch's Lens – A Unique Photo Exhibition at DAC
How do our daily rhythms influence the flow of the city and its communities? This question is explored in Danish Architecture Center's (DAC) newest photo exhibition, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, where internationally acclaimed photographer Peter Funch presents his two iconic photographic series, 'Babel Tales' and '42nd and Vanderbilt'. The exhibition offers a fascinating view of New York street life as you've never seen it before.
From 2004 to 2017, Funch lived in New York, where he documented the city's rhythm and the daily flow of residents and visitors. The resulting two photographic series portray how we are both unique individuals and part of a larger collective narrative.
An Artist in Focus: Film and Book Release The exhibition, which presents 58 works, is complemented by a new film produced by DAC. In the film, Peter Funch shares his thoughts on the process behind Babel Tales and 42nd and Vanderbilt, offering unique insights into his creative approach and his reflections on the significance of time, urban life, and photography. The film is a central part of the exhibition and gives audiences a deeper understanding of the artist's perspective and intention.
A new book will also be released that brings together works from the two photographic series and presents exclusive reflections from Peter Funch. Visitors can take home part of this fascinating exhibition with the book, available at the DAC Design Shop.
Urban Repetitions: Babel Tales At first glance, the works in Babel Tales (2006-2011) may seem like random glimpses of city life, but they are in fact the result of a meticulous process. Funch returned to the same New York locations day after day, collecting patterns: people yawning, holding balloons, or wearing red clothes. By digitally combining these moments into a single image, he playfully experiments with time and space – and poses the question: How unique are we in our daily routines?
The Authenticity of Morning Rush: 42nd and Vanderbilt In contrast, 42nd and Vanderbilt (2007-2016) provides an honest glimpse into New York's morning rush. For nine years, Funch photographed the same street corner every morning between 8:30 and 9:30. In this series, he documents how the same faces repeatedly pass before his lens – this time capturing them without any digital manipulation. The series invites us to reflect on our own routines and on how we navigate between individuality and collectivity. 2/2
A Voice for the Future Peter Funch (b. 1974) is a Danish award-winning photographer with an exceptional international career. He lived in New York for 13 years and now lives and works in Paris. Compared to other artists, his background is atypical, which is precisely what makes him one of the most important voices of our time. Funch's work bridges the gap between documentation and art, and his works have previously been exhibited at leading international venues such as Louisiana, The Hole in New York and Colette in Paris. His perspective aligns with DAC's mission to explore how architecture, design, and urban individuals interact.
This is a small-scale photo exhibition, open on weekends
