Some memories don’t return because we look for them. They arrive on their own, usually while we’re occupied with something else. Peeling fruit. Stepping out on a frozen lake. Looking through a window that reflects more than it reveals.

Søren Arildsen aim to let his paintings inhabit that uncertain territory. Figures drift through domestic interiors, parks and anonymous corners of the city as though they have stepped out of recollection rather than observation. Nothing insists on a fixed narrative. Instead, each work lingers in the space where memory quietly edits reality, softening one detail while sharpening another.

The exhibition’s title, In the Mood for Apples, feels less like a theme than a passing state of mind. The apple becomes an ordinary object carrying disproportionate emotional weight, a reminder that nostalgia often attaches itself to the smallest things. These paintings suggest that memory is not an archive but an active painter, constantly repainting the past with colours borrowed from the present.

Framed by hand-built frames, the works hold a quiet tension between permanence and fragility. Like the memories they evoke, they seem complete at first glance, yet remain open, unfinished, and strangely familiar long after you’ve left the room.

Søren Arildsen (b. 1996) lives and works in Copenhagen. Arildsen graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2025 as a Master of Fine Arts.
