T.T.I.T.T.T.T.T.
An exhibition by Chris Duncan
A body of work reliant on the passing of time and long term effects of sun exposure to fabric. "The Time It Takes To Take The Time" is a collection of works made in the artists' bedroom windows, warehouse skylights and architectural elements on rooftops in Oakland, California. Manufactured colored fabric is placed in these locales and without the use of dye, emulsion or any purposefully manipulated chemical process, imagery emerges through time (4 -12 months) and ultraviolet exposure. At once a homage to the power of the sun, the works also provide a haunting intimacy and an effect that blurs the conversations of painting and photography. With society being neck deep in the information age and reliant (if not addicted) to the immediacy of social media, the concept of time takes precedence. The works in T.T.I.T.T.T.T.T. become mile markers and are made by honoring the passing of time, not the acceleration of it.
Chris Duncan, born 1974, holds a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts and a MFA from Stanford University. Duncan’s work has been included in recent exhibitions at The Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley, CA; Museum Of Modern Art, NY, New York; De Rosa Preserve, Napa, CA; Cooper Cole Gallery, Toronto, Canada and Halsey McKay, East Hampton, USA. Duncan’s work is held in the collections of the Museum Of Modern Art, New York, NY; SFMoMA, San Francisco, CA; The Kemper Art Museum, St. Louis, MO; Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley, CA and the Arsenal, Montreal, Canada. Outside of his studio practice he organises events and runs a small artist book press and record label called LAND AND SEA with his wife. Duncan currently lives and works in Oakland, California.
