Inquiry

This Holiday season Magasin du Nord invited Rose Eken and Lulu Kaalund, among five other Danish artists, to decorate one of their windows with their own take on what a Christmas tree could look like.

Stop by Magasin du Nord, Kongens Nytorv 13, to see the windows decorations which will be on view throughout December.

Magasin Journal visited the artists studios for a conversation about their relationship with Christmas and their thoughts behind making the window displays:

I have lived in Copenhagen all my life and went to primary school in the city. I went to Kongens Nytorv for school excursions. The decoration at d'Angleterre was then a topic of conversation for weeks and everyone came to the launch. And on the ice rink. It was magical! It is a huge honor to be allowed to participate and perhaps be lucky to be able to help pass that feeling on."

"The Christmas tree was the point of depature – it's both an easy and difficult subject because it's such a loaded topic for all of us and I have chosen to play with that. There's probably nothing more tradition-bound than Christmas. We have a collective understanding of what Christmas is and at the same time each individual family also has its own rituals - and we care so much! That's what's interesting to me. The Christmas tree is central to Christmas, and there is something both beautiful and grotesque about cutting down a tree and taking it into the living room and decorating it for a single evening.”
