In Where the Palm Meets the Pine, Richard Colman presents a radical new body of work: 21 paintings created over the past year. In flux. In and out of focus. Vibrating. The new works feel urgent and timeless. Transforming. Groups of figures appearing and disappearing. Compositions disintegrating and consolidating. Somewhere beyond figuration and abstraction. Cycles of painting and repainting. Saturated deep hues. Colors shimmering. Layers trembling. Past, present, and future intertwined. Acutely now, but only momentarily. Melancholic yet optimistic. Navigating the human condition. Finding strength in fragility. Beautifully uncanny. Transcendental painting.

Richard Colman, born in 1976 in Maryland, USA, is known for blending figurative imagery with bold geometry. Using complex compositions, Colman explores themes of the human condition and societal hierarchies. His work ranges from small to large-scale paintings, murals and installations. Colman currently lives and works in San Francisco, USA, and on a farm converted into a large-scale studio in rural Connecticut. He has exhibited extensively in Europe and America. Recent exhibitions include Beyond the Streets, Shanghai, China (2023); The Last California Paintings, Bim Bam Gallery, Paris, France (2022); and 33 Lilies, New Image Art, Los Angeles, USA (2021). Where the Palm Meets the Pine is Colman’s sixth solo exhibition with V1 Gallery.
