The Longest Cornrow, a performance by Devin Troy Strother at Sow and Tailor
If you're in LA go experience a live performance by Los Angeles based artist Devin Troy Strother at Sow and Tailor. The performance will take place June 6 - June 9, with an artist reception held on June 8 from 12:00pm to 6:00pm.
The Longest Cornrowdelves deeply into themes intrinsic to Devin Troy Strother’s practice, encompassing identity, heritage, aesthetics, and personal maintenance. This work scrutinizes traditional practices related to beauty, presentation, and cultural stereotypes. By employing relational aesthetics, the performance encourages active participation, creating an interactive experience for viewers.
The performance investigates the beauty, tradition, and the labor of getting one’s hair braided. The Longest Cornrow, embraces spectacle and endurance to highlight the act of self care as ceremony.The performance will take place over the course of 4 days where Devin will have his hair braided continuously which will result in a sprawling installation.
This is the first of a series of four performances that will take place throughout the Summer and Fall of 2024.The series will conclude with a solo exhibition by Devin Troy Strother in November 2024 at The Pit in Los Angeles" - Sow and Taylor

Utilizing oil stick, oil pastel and Flashe paint on burlap stretched over canvas, JJ Manford curates imagined domestic spaces filled with an array of historic artworks, objects, textiles, furniture, and animals. Recent solo shows include “Jaune Brilliant” at Galeria Marta Cervera in Madrid and “Hayden Rowe Street” at Derek Eller Gallery in NYC, which was reviewed by Donald Kuspit in Artforum. His work can be found in public collections at the Brooklyn Museum, the Insititute of Contemporary Art in Miami, and the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY. He lives and works in Brooklyn, where he is a founding member of Underdonk and Tappeto Volante Projects.
