On the occasion of Jesper Elg's 50th birthday the Danish newspaper Politiken brings a lengthy interview with the V1 Gallery founder and director. He talks about his dreams, bad habits and looks back at his achievements. When asked by journalist Johanne Lerhardt about what his biggest accomplishment is, he answers:
"Definitely starting V1 Gallery. In 2002, my good friend Peter Funch, who’s an artist, and I were walking around hungover in Vesterbro (a neighborhood in Copenhagen). I asked him if we should start a gallery. He said yes, and about half a year later, we opened a small gallery on Absalonsgade.
A lot of wonderful friends helped us renovate the space and really made it look like a proper gallery with its white walls. It looked pretty nice - until the American artist group FAILE had an exhibition where they completely plastered the walls. There were at least 500 people at the opening, so it turned into a big street party in Vesterbro.
The problem was that these artists were used to working on the streets, so they used a special kind of glue to stick their works to the walls, and it was an absolute nightmare to get off again"
- Jesper Elg
