193 Days in Stockholm
A solo exhibition by Loji Höskuldsson
MARKET ART FAIR 2025
THURSDAY MAY 15. – MAY 18. 2025.
Loji Höskuldsson has created his most ambitious work to date—a six-panel embroidery titled 193 Days in Stockholm. The piece documents his experience living in Stockholm over the course of 193 days, weaving in rich references to the Swedish landscape, flora and fauna, regional products, and beloved cultural icons such as midsommarstång, smörgåsbord, Volvo, IKEA, ABBA, and Systembolaget, rendered in Höskuldsson’s signature embroidered style. Taking nearly six months to complete, this monumental work also offers a subtle nod to Monet’s water lilies in the Orangerie. In Höskuldsson’s embroideries, there is a soft hope for humanity on the brink. His works have a disarming way of observing and contemplating our shared existence.
Höskuldsson’s process is excruciating slow, days and months, stich by stich, small and large-scale compositions on burlap, give him ample time to reflect on the subject matter at hand. This meditative creative process is embedded in the final work, encouraging an intuitive and contemplative response from the viewer. Slowing our cognitive response to the work leaves space for a more tactile relationship and reading of the work. It is a form of storytelling founded in a craft tradition, harnessed to explore contemporary issues.
Loji Höskuldsson (b. 1987, Iceland) lives and works in Reykjavík.
