V1 Gallery is pleased to present
Bonding
A solo exhibition by Frederik Nystrup-Larsen
CHART Art Fair
28-31 August 2025
For CHART 2025, V1 Gallery is thrilled to present Bonding, a series of paintings and sculptures that revolve around our relationship with local plant life by Frederik Nystrup-Larsen. Gradually, the ability to name plant species is being lost and we are afflicted with plant blindness, the tendency to ignore and overlook the most common species we encounter on a daily basis. This leads to the deprioritisation and underestimation of plants as well as the inability to recognise the integral part plants play in the biosphere. The end result is a distanced relationship between humanity and nature.
While once our grandparents could name flowers growing in the garden and between sidewalk cracks, we increasingly overlook the many species growing all around us, failing to recognise the plants that underpin life as we know it. With this loss of knowledge comes a loss of perception, of care and of preservation all of which are factors in the planet’s current mass extinction event wherein thousands of species are disappearing extremely rapidly. In recognising, naming and becoming aware of plants, we can narrow the distance between the natural and artificial worlds, bringing us closer to reconnecting nature. Nystrup-Larsen’s work acts as a kind of archive and functions as a means of rebuilding our awareness and therefore relationship with local flora.
For CHART in Tivoli, Nystrup-Larsen created Ivy Fence as an intervention in Tivoli’s space, where he has veiled a pentagonal glass pavilion in aluminium ivy. The ivy is insistent, penetrating the grid of civilization, reminding us how nature relentlessly crawls over the man-made. The work lies between decoration and colonization – where nature, even as a construction, reclaims its place. The work is shown in parallel with Nystrup-Larsen’s solo presentation at CHART, where ivy also appears on frames and in paintings.
Frederik Nystrup-Larsen (b. 1992) lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. He holds a MA from The Royal College of Art, sculpture department, London and a BA from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design. Recent exhibitions include Stolen Motifs, Vol. 1 at V1 Gallery, Copenhagen (2024); 6/Daily コンビニ — CASH ONLY, with Oliver Sundqvist at The Plug, Tokyo, Japan (2024); and Love Is Not
