V1 Gallery / Eighteen congratulates Thomas Øvlisen on the opening of his anticipated exhibition Anden stjerne til højre at Nikolaj Kunsthal.
“Second star to the right” – taking his exhibition title from J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, Thomas Øvlisen’s site-specific exhibition transforms the upper gallery of the repurposed gothic church building of Nikolaj Kunsthal into a poetic, performative and ever-changing playground.
Four tons of pink sand covers the floors of the exhibition space, bathing it in a surreal light. In each end of the room, an installation consisting of concrete walls with a white rectangle painted on the back wall seems to mimic the architecture of a sports court. Along the walls of the nave, eight paintings of seagulls, painted with quick, energetic brushstrokes, applied on sheets of transparent plexiglass, appear as something in between impressionist seascapes and modified basketball goals. Each is suspended in front of a window, allowing natural daylight to be channeled through blue hues of paint.
Opening: Wednesday April 21, 11AM-8PM
Exhibition period: April 21 – May 9, 2021
Free admission
