Rose Eken’s ceramic installations and miniature sculptures demonstrate a combination of meticulous craftsmanship and a more immediate do-it-yourself approach. They appear recognisable and leave evidence of lived life. Morning coffee, cigarette butts, potted cactuses, make-up and other handbag essentials. Although created in the same dimensions as those objects they imitate, once burned, a displacement of form occurs. A détournement closer to our idea of the object than the actual object. They are more aligned with the notion of alienation rather than the banal or the trivial. The everyday in this sense becomes bound up with the potential opening onto new meanings.
