Jon Pilkington (b. 1990 in St. Helens, lives and works in Copenhagen) retrieves the British tradition of Staffordshire pottery. Originated in mid England 1780 – 1875, the folk-art earthenware figurines or small tableaus were created to share visual stories at a time when most of the British population was illiterate, and the proliferation of mass-produced images was still in its nascency.

Rendered with urgency and a historical awareness, Pilkington’s figurines appear with a rare presentness, an air of melancholy or longing, caught in eternal poses.
Weaving fragments of abstraction and figuration together, the multi-layered compositions let objects dissolve into textures and hues while building shapes and structures from layers of swift brushstrokes and tusch deliveries. Fragmented poems with multiple possible readings.

Jon Pilkington’s solo exhibition Going to Market, Returning Home continues at V1 Gallery through June 1, 2019.
