With this new body of work, 9 paintings and a steel sculpture, Geoff McFetridge invites the viewer to begin again:

“Before this group of works left the studio, my friends 9-year-old commented on the paintings: ‘he is dealing a lot with shapes, and figures.’ So familiar are my subjects that the images can often be understood nearly intuitively. I rely on viewers, to linger on the paintings with childlike eyes, for them to do things beyond a moment. I rely on both the viewer’s visual literacy and their desire to question the visual language that surrounds them. In order to contribute to that visual language, I must engage the world around me as a visual construction with a syntax, just like a written piece of language. To be visually educated is to understand that all images are more than self-expression, that there is not a pure relationship between the painting and the artist. But to understand that each image is a little kind of propaganda, a highly composed visual form designed to illicit a feeling or what I have sometimes called ‘the opposite of an idea.'”
