2023 Out of the Box, Newport Street Gallery, London, United Kingdom Kaspar Oppen Samuelsen (b. 1977) lives and works in Kalundborg, Denmark. He holds a BFA with honors from Goldsmiths College, University of London, and an MFA from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
Drawing on a broad and erudite cultural register, Oppen Samuelsen creates painterly worlds in which imagination becomes a generous lens for both the tragic and the comic. His practice is shaped by close affinities with cinema, theatre, and art history, and is finely attuned to the performative conditions of lived experience. Through gentle yet precise processes of disintegration and reassembly, drawing and color unfold into fluid, rhythmic compositions. Each element exists in an attentive dialogue with the others, producing a visual language marked by openness, transformation, and a quiet elegance, where meaning remains relational and continuously in the making. Humans, animals, and landscapes converge in mutable, hybrid forms, where the boundaries between the physical and metaphysical dissolve. Local environments are reimagined as dreamlike tableaux, populated by creatures that seem both familiar and timeless, inhabiting a world that flows according to its own subtle, poetic logic.
